FINAL STEPS TOWARDS A READY-TO-PRINT TEXT

The linguistic skills and capabilities of translators are as diverse as the translators themselves. Translating a text calls for a high degree of creativity and the ability to express yourself well. In addition to finding the right wording, researching suitable specialised terms, building translation memories and using customers’ glossaries, linguists must keep an eye on correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Revision

Formerly the dual-control principle – a second translator checks the target language content against the original for any mistakes. The file is also checked again for completeness and formatting.

Review

After translation, the target text is reviewed by a domain specialist. For example, a technical operating manual is checked by an engineer who is specialised in the given domain, or a health professional checks a medical/pharmaceutical text.

Proofreading

Before printing, the target text is checked for mistakes, the main focus being on orthography (spelling), punctuation and grammar. Attention is also given to the syntax (sentence structure), phrasing and style of the target text.
